Many techniques have been developed for the measurement of pressure and vacuum. Instruments used to measure pressure are called pressure gauges or vacuum gauges. A pressure gauge or vacuum gauge is used to measure the pressure in a vacuum, which is broadly divided into two categories i.E. High and low vacuum and sometimes ultra-high vacuum. Pressure gauges are the measuring device that are of two types - one that calculates the force exerted on the surface by incident particle flux is direct reading gauge and the other that record the pressure by measuring gas property and changes with gas density is the indirect-reading pressure gauge. General pressure gauge provides reliable service in application where media does not corrode. Industrial pressure gauge is used in demanding applications and is made of various metals including stainless steel and many others. Process pressure gauges are used for the chemical and petroleum processing industries for measuring and controlling the pressure. Some pressure gauges that include contract gauges; differential type pressure gauges, low pressure gauge, precision pressure gauges, differential pressure gauges and many others are applied for special purposes. Other kinds of gauges are used for fire sprinkler, paper machine, and refrigeration and specialty gas applications. High purity pressure gauges are applied for use in high purity semiconductor gas and liquid applications. Pressure gauges and pressure switches are among the most often used instruments in a plant. But because of their great numbers, attention to maintenance--and reliability--can be compromised. As a consequence, it is not uncommon in older plants to see many gauges and pressure switches out of service. This is unfortunate because, if a plant is operated with a failed pressure switch, the safety of the plant may be compromised. Conversely, if a plant can operate safely while a pressure gauge is defective, it shows that the pressure gauge was not needed in the first place. Therefore, one goal of good process instrumentation design is to install fewer but more useful and more reliable pressure gauges and pressure switches. Pressure gauges are used for a variety of industrial and application-specific pressure monitoring applications. Uses include visual monitoring of air and gas pressure for compressors, vacuum equipment, process lines and specialty tank applications such as medical gas cylinders and fire extinguishers.
