Universal joint is a joint in a rigid rod that allows the rod to 'bend' in any direction. It consists of a pair of ordinary hinges located close together, but oriented at 90° relative to each other. They are widely found in the drive shaft of automobile. They are the oldest and popular forms of flexible couplings. In their simplest form, they consist of two shaft yokes at right angles to each other and a four point cross which connects the yokes. The cross rides inside the bearing cap assemblies, which are pressed into the yoke eyes. Universal joints are common wherever a drive shaft needs to turn a corner, a drive shaft with a universal joint can freely rotate through the universal joint, and no gears are required to couple the two ends. They are widely used in automotive industry.
