They grow large in the states of jammu & kashmir, himachal pradesh, hilly regions of north uttar pradesh, tamilnadu, maharashtra, karnataka, gujarat, andhra pradesh, assam, madhya pradesh, rajasthan, punjab, tripura, west bengal and orissa. Onion is widely cultivated in rajkot, shisnag, kalavad, gondal, jetpur, mahuva and bhavnagar districts of gujarat and angul, sambalpur, damnia regions of orissa. India places 2nd in onion production in the world. The major vegetables grown in india are onion, brinjal, cabbage, chills, ginger, bendi, cauliflower, okra, peas, potato and papaya etc. Of these vegetables potato, tomato, onion, cabbage and cauliflower account for around 60% of the total vegetable production in the country. Mushrooms are known for their nutritive and medicinal value. In india, mushroom is grown on hilly areas all the year round and in northern plains during winter under seasonal growing conditions. It is grown on compost prepared from wheat paddy straw.
