With steam age came the demand for pressure measuring instruments. Bourdon tubes or bellows, where mechanical displacements were transferred to an indicating pointer were the first pressure instruments, and are still in use today.A pressure sensor measures the pressure, typically of gases or fluids. Pressure is an expression of the force required to stop a gas or fluid from expanding, and is usually stated in terms of force per unit area. A pressure sensor generates a signal related to the pressure imposed. Typically, such a signal is electrical, but it might also include additional means, such as optic signals, visual signals and/or auditory signals. Pressure sensors have particular utility for monitoring the pressure in a fluid network. As compared with flow sensors, pressure sensors often require less cost to achieve a similar result. Pressure sensors are often fabricated using thin membranes that flex under pressure. Some pressure sensors function in a binary manner, i.E., when pressure is applied to a pressure sensor, the sensor acts to complete or break an electrical circuit. Some speed cameras use them. There are five main pressure sensor types such as absolute, gauge, vacuum, differential and sealed. Each of these sensors measures different pressure variables. The first of these sensor types are absolute sensors. These devices test for absolute pressure, which is a measurement of pressure, relative to a perfect vacuum. Gauge sensors are the most common type of pressure sensors. They can be calibrated to measure pressure with respect to atmospheric pressure at a given location. Vacuum sensors are used in situations where the pressure level that is being tested for, is lower than the localized atmospheric pressure. Differential pressure is measured by reading the difference between the input of two or more pressure levels. Finally, sealed gauged sensors measure pressure relative to one atmosphere at sea level regardless of local atmospheric pressure. Pressure sensors include all sensors, pressure transducer and elements that produce an electrical signal proportional to pressure or changes in pressure. A pressure transducer is a transducer that converts pressure into an analog electrical signal. Pressure sensors are devices that read changes in pressure, and relay this data to recorders or switches. They are commonly used in safety devices such as safety mats, edges and bumpers to actuate shut-off switches. Other pressure devices include transducers, transmitters, elements, indicators, gauges (bellows, bourdon tubes, capsule elements and diaphragm elements) and controllers. There are many applications for pressure sensors but we can narrow them down to two major categories i.E. Pressure sensing and altitude sensing. Pressure sensing is the direct use of pressure sensors to measure pressure. This is useful in weather instrumentation, aircraft, cars, and any other machinery that has pressure functionality implemented. While altitude sensing is useful in aircraft, rockets, satellites, weather balloons, and many other applications. All these applications make use of the relationship between changes in pressure relative to the altitude.
