Scanner is an optical device that reads a printed page or transparency and converts it into a graphics image for the computer. The scanner does not recognize or differentiate in any manner the content of the material it is scanning. Everything is converted into a bitmapped image, which is a pattern of dots.

Different types of scanners are readily available in the market such as canon pixma, drum scanners, flatbed scanners, photo scanners, film scanners, industrial barcode scanners, police scanners, radio scanner etc. Barcode scanners capture the data from the barcode and transmit it into a computer system, which then can translate the information, and in most cases store it into a database. Barcode scanners are available in various types depending on the type of application like hand held, on-counter, 2d imager, fixed mount, cordless and memory scanners. Common features of bar code scanners include audible or visual "good reading" indicators, omni-directional reading ability, numeric or alphanumeric keypad included, and memory for data and program storage. Designed to maximize productivity even in less than optimum conditions, barcode scanners find use in a variety of areas from point of sale to inventory management. Radio scanner can receive signals transmitted at a wide range of frequencies, allowing users to listen in on a variety of different communications including air traffic control, emergency services (police, ambulance and fire), hobbyists (citizens band), race teams, astronauts ...And so on. Furthermore, a radio scanner contains microprocessors, which enable them to automatically detect when a transmission is occurring on a particular frequency. Police scanners, the nickname given to a radio scanner. Police scanners are special receiver that is capable of receiving wireless radio signal transmissions. These wireless signals include two-way radio transmissions used everyday in public safety and business operations. Police scanners pick up these radio signals, similar to an am/fm radio. The vast majority of users of police scanners include - law-abiding citizens, on/off-duty or volunteer's police officers and firefighters, family members of police officers and firefighters, neighborhood watch groups, regional emergency disaster groups, public safety organizations, amateur/ham operators and news media organizations.
