Jacks are most often known as lifting jacks. They are widely used for leveling or positioning heavy equipment, or for supporting structures. They are widely used in automobiles for lifting vehicles. They often function by means of a screw or cylinder-based actuator, powered via hydraulic, mechanical, electric or manual (hand or foot) means. The most common type of lifts available in the market includes bottle, inflatable, pallet, ratchet, scissors, screw, service or floor, toe, and transmission. The bottle jacks have hydraulic cylinder lifting mechanisms, frequently hand pumped. Pallet jacks are available in manual and mechanical lift configurations. Service or floor lifting jacks are typically intended to get loads as in vehicles. They are used in situations where long distance support and lift are needed. Toe jacks are used under work pieces with little ground clearance. Transmission jacks are designed for lifting, removing, and installing transmissions or engines from vehicles.
