Water based adhesives use water as the application fluid, by suspending adhesive particles in water and thus reducing its viscosity. This adhesive soluble water helps in application of the adhesive with varying thickness to different surfaces. Adhesives based water evaporates and cures in ambient and non-thermal conditions. Water based adhesives consist mainly of polyvinyl acetate (pva), polyacrylate, natural rubber, carboxylated-sbr, chloroprene rubber, polyurethane, etc. These derivatives increase the strength characteristics of the water based adhesives.
Most water based adhesives need to be stabilized to achieve and maintain good properties. Liquid additives like irganox® 1520, irganox® 1135 allow easy preparation of emulsions and are therefore particularly well suited for applications.
Adhesives based on emulsion polymers are gaining in popularity for a number of reasons. The most notable of these is that switching to water based adhesives from solvent based adhesives allows manufacturers to significantly reduce their emissions of volatile organic compounds. Other benefits to emulsion adhesives include the absence of flammable solvents, which not only facilitates mixing and handling, but also reduces the special precautions required for the use of solvent based adhesives.
Water soluble adhesives have a wide range of applications. In construction areas, installation of flooring, carpeting, plywood panelling, ceramic tile, furniture manufacturing, etc. Use these adhesives. Non-rigid items use this adhesive for bonding woven and non-woven fabrics. This adhesive is also utilized in packaging industries on a large scale, like manufacturing of cardboard and paper boxes, labels and food packaging. Producers use water based adhesives for making pressure adhesive tapes. Manufacturing of automobiles, boats, buses and mobile homes utilize the water based adhesive. Acid free water based adhesives are used for mounting posters, prints, photographs and other items onto various wooden surfaces. This adhesive can also be used to mount items onto foam core, chipboard, mat board, and corrugated surfaces.
Water based adhesives protect the environment while increasing workplace safety. Because solvents are not present in aqueous adhesives and primers, workers aren't exposed to fumes. This, in turn, eliminates potential fire hazards associated with flammable solvents. Since aqueous adhesive systems are diluted with deionized water at a fraction of the cost of solvents, production application costs can be dramatically reduced as well. Storage of hazardous solvents can also be eliminated or significantly reduced, leading to a reduction in insurance and inventory costs.
Water-based adhesives that provide an effective water resistant bond between dissimilar materials such as plastic and cellulose, is both safe for human contact use and inexpensive to manufacture. It is easy to use in large scale, high speed manufacturing operations.
