Wood sealants are used as a protective coating to prevent water, dirt or abrasion resistance. Wood sealant comes in three versions solid stains, semi-transparant, and clear. There are 3 primary types of useful wood sealants open sealant, closed sealant, and microporous sealant. Open sealants are purely "color coats", and provide no protection from absorption of water or from chemical attack. They are least expensive and least effective. Closed sealants are typically hard, possibly glossy, and usually oil-based; the closed finishes are especially ill suited for exterior wood such as decks and siding. Microporous sealants are the "perfect" finishes. Their open quality is critically important to the long-term preservation of wood, as it allows the escape of moisture which may have entered from the underside of shakes, decking, siding, etc. - it allows the wood to "breathe.
