Hard water is caused by calcium and magnesium that are dissolved in the water. Water softening systems reduces the hardness of water. It removes the minerals from water by means of an ion-exchange process. The water softening system consists of a mineral tank and a brine tank. The water supply pipe is connected to the mineral tank so that water coming into the house must pass through the tank before it can be used. There are different types of water softening equipment that are distinguished by the manner in which they are recharged they are automatically, semi-automatically, or manually. Many industries require softened water for such uses as processing and dyeing textiles, tanning leather, cleaning dairy equipment and commercial laundering. Water softening systems are installed in some municipal water systems for the dual purpose of protecting the plant equipment and better serving industrial and residential users.
