Herbicides are any substance that is toxic to plants; usually used to kill specific unwanted plants. There are general two types of herbicides, selective and non-selective herbicides. Selective herbicides kill certain targets while leaving the desired crop relatively unharmed. Herbicides, which are used to clear waste ground are nonselective herbicides and kill every plant with which they come into contact. Aquatic herbicides are used in water to kill or control aquatic plants. Herbicides are widely used in agriculture, and relatively smaller quantities are used in forestry, pasture systems, and management of areas set aside as wildlife habitat. Herbicides are also used extensively away from the farm, in areas such as industrial sites, roadsides, ditch banks, irrigation canals, fence lines, recreational areas, railroad embankments, and power line rights-of-way.
