Water or aquatic plants are termed as those plants which adapt the living of the aquatic environment. These plants only grow in water and soil that are permanently saturated with water. These plants have thin cuticles, flat leaves, less rigid structure which is supported by the water pressure. These plants are carried by smaller roots which act as a supporting base to these plants. These plants are undervalued part of the freshwater eco system. Habitat for these plants provides a small space for small aquatic snails to live in. These water plants are food for many animals and birds like geese, ducks. These plants usually feed seeds and tubers of plants. The cover of these plants is used by fishes to hide from the predator. They provide enough foliage to protect them with covers which are these water plants itself.These plants control the erosion as because the emergent plant protects the shore from getting eroded. Also it helps in stabilizing the sediment which increases the clarity of the water. The types of water plants are floating water plants. These plants float freely in the surface of the water which helps to reduce the algae which is often seen in water. It competes with the nutrients and shading the water to keep cool. Most of these floaters are tropical and are supposed to be removed from the pond.
Most popular and famous floating plants are water hyacinth developing a strong trailing root system which removes the extra nutrients and pollutants from the pond. These are very much used for the water purification process because of their natural filtering ability.
