Hydraulic control valves are as important part to the hydraulic machinery as cpu is to the computer or heart to a human body. Control valves in the hydraulic machinery control the flow of the fluid and direct it to the desired actuator. The different types of actuators include hydraulic cylinder, rotary actuator, hydraulic motor, hydrostatic transmission and brakes. Directional control valves direct the fluid to the desired actuators. A spool with a steel or glass housing helps to generate the path for the fluid. The spool has central position maintained and the springs help to direct the path. When the spool is moved to the opposite direction the supply and return paths are switched. When the spool is allowed to return to neutral (center) position the actuator fluid paths are blocked, locking it in position. Stack or pile up is the keyword for the framework of directional control valves as one valve for each hydraulic cylinder and one fluid input supplies all the valves in the stack. Flow control valve is another type of control valve which is also known as speed control valve. Flow control valve controls the volume of oil passed at a given piont. Flow control valve can also said as metering valve as the fluid approaches a component or leaves it. Flow control valve can be needle shape to cam shaped device. Other types of control valves include pressure relief valves, pressure reducing valves, sequence valves, shuttle valves, check valves, pilot contol check valves, counterbalance valves, catridge valves and auxilary valves. Steel alloys and aluminum is widely used in the manufacture of these hydraulic control valves, which makes them adaptable to harsh conditions. They are also built in separate pressure ranges to cater to job specifications. The control valve is one of the most expensive and sensitive parts of a hydraulic circuit.
