Carbon monoxide (co) is a colorless, odorless, flammable, tasteless and highly toxic gas that is a major product of the incomplete combustion of carbon and carbon compounds. This carbon monoxide gas is slightly soluble in water and burns in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide. Carbon monoxide gas is a component of producer gas and water gas, which is widely, used artificial fuels. As a reducing agent, this chemical product removes oxygen from many compounds and can be used in the reduction of metals such as iron from the ores. At high pressures and elevated temperatures it reacts with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst to form methanol. It is also a major industrial gas that has many applications in bulk chemical manufacturing and can even be used in the production of phosgene. This gas and methanol react in the presence of a homogeneous rhodium catalyst and hi to give acetic acid.
