Nitrogen gas (n2) is a universal industrial gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It forms nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide with oxygen, ammonia with hydrogen and nitrogen sulfide with sulfur. Nitrogen is necessary for various biological processes and can often be used as a fertilizer, usually in the form of ammonia and ammonia-based compounds. Nitrogen blanketing is applied to protect inflammable or explosive solids and liquids from contact with air. Liquid nitrogen is preferred to freeze soft or tough substances prior to their entering to a size reduction process. As a shield gas, it is also suitable for the heat treatment of iron, steel and other metals. Refineries, petrochemical plants and marine tankers use this gas to purge equipments, tanks and pipelines of dangerous vapors and gases. In health care fields, this nitrogen compound is even used to freeze blood and livestock semen to store them for years.
