Hydrofluoric acid (hf) is a colourless, highly corrosive solution of hydrogen fluoride in water. It has a strong, pungent suffocating odor. Hydrofluoric acid is a reducing agent; hence its long-term storage requires a container that is not only tightly sealed, but with minimum air volume inside. It is used to etch glass to remove surface oxides from silicon in the semiconductor industry. Hydrofluoric acid is also used to clean brickwork, in refinement of high-octane gasoline, to make computer screens, in florescent bulbs, and in some household dust removers. Hydrofluoric acid is also used in the synthesis of many fluorine -containing organic compounds, including teflon and refrigerants such as freon. Hydrofluoric acid is used in fabric industry for stain removal, leather industry, in manufacture and reduction of aluminum oxides and chlorides, insecticides and fertilizer production, drug and dye production, production of high-octane fuel etc.
