Nitric acid is a strong chemical compound of nitrogen dioxide and water known as aqua forties, is a colorless, corrosive liquid. Concentrated nitric acid compound is referred to as fuming nitric acid that is divided into kinds of fuming acids, which includes white fuming nitric acid and red fuming nitric acid. Nitric acid solution is commonly used as a laboratory reagent that is also applied in the manufacture of explosives such as nitroglycerin, trinitrotoluene and rdx. Concentrated nitric acid dyes human skin yellow due to interaction with the skin protein keratin. Chief application of this inorganic acid is in the preparation of fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate and explosives and even in the manufacturing of chemicals in making dyes and in metallurgy. Nitric acid is an oxidizing agent that can prove explosive, if reacted with compounds such as cyanide, carbides and with metallic powders. In addition to these applications, this inorganic chemical is effective in the production of aqua regia, one of the few reagents that are helpful in dissolving gold and silver.
