Sulphur dioxide (so2) is a colorless gas, about 2.5 times as heavy as air, with a suffocating smell, faint sweetish odour. Sulphur dioxide is a pale yellow, odorless, brittle solid, which is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulphide. Sulphur dioxide is used as preservative in alchoholic drink, dried fruit, the preservative is used to maintain the appearance of the fruit, to prevent it from rotting. Sulphur dioxide is also used in the process of manufacturing sulphuric acid. Sulphur dioxide is used in wine industry, chemical industry, fertilizer industry, preservative industry, paper industry etc. There are also many ill effects of sulphur dioxide and hence it should be handled extremely carefully.
