Aluminium oxide is a chemical compound of aluminium and oxygen and commonly referred to in the mining, ceramic and material science as alumina and come in two concentrations. This aluminium oxide is soluble in water and organic liquids that also occurs in two crystalline forms and are applied in the glassmaking, in cosmetics and in the pharmacy field as an antacid. This chemical material is responsible for metallic aluminium's resistance to weathering and is also an excellent thermal and electrical insulator. In its crystalline form this aluminium oxide is called condum, which is very hard, makes this inorganic chemical suitable for use as an abrasive and as a component for cutting tools. This aluminium oxide is the main component of bauxite that is the principal ore of aluminium. Aluminium oxide powder is frequently used as a medium for chromatography. Combined with silica and other materials aluminium oxide occurs in clays, feldspars and micas. Aluminium oxide also has other industrial applications that include ceramics, pigments and chemical manufacturing and in the making of potteries, porcelain and bricks.
