Liquid helium is inert, colorless, odorless, non-corrosive, extremely cold, and nonflammable that occurs in natural gas and with radioactive ores. Helium exists in liquid form only at very low temperature. The temperatures required to liquefy helium are low because of the weakness of the attraction between helium atoms. Liquid helium can be cooled almost to absolute zero at normal pressure by rapidly removing the vapor above the liquid. Liquid helium is most frequently provided to customers in a liquid container. Liquid helium container valves should never be left open to atmosphere for extended periods. Liquid helium has become one of the most important materials in science, dramatically increasing the demand for this unique product. Other liquid helium uses include cooling infrared detectors, space simulations, materials testing, and in biological and superconductivity research. Liquid helium is also used in super conducting magnet applications, including magnetic resonance imaging.
