Jigs and fixtures along with specific tooling form a critical element of machinery. Its main purpose is to align the tool and hold the work piece properly during machining. A fixture holds the work while cutting tools are in operation but like jig it has no guides or special arrangements for guiding tools. A jig is also a fixture for locating or holding the work and guiding the cutting tool in operations such as drilling, reaming, countersinking and counter boring.
when there are large quantities of parts to be manufactured jigs and fixtures can greatly help in reducing the cost. When accuracy and interchangeability of the finished products are important their use is very advantageous. For maintaining extreme accuracy they are also used in low or limited production jobs. One of their biggest advantages is that even unskilled labor can accomplish the job using these special tools. Jigs and fixtures are mostly used in the automotive, welding and aerospace industries.
