Reamers are basically rotary tool of cylindrical or conical shape that are used to remove lightweight material and are also ideal for deburring and sizing the inside diameters of holes. Reamers are used for enlarging or finishing a hole previously drilled, bored, or cored to give a good finish and an accurate dimension.Reamers manufactured today come in different sizes and designs depending on the specification of the job that they are used. A typical reamer consists of a set of parallel straight or helical cutting edges along the length of a cylindrical body. Each cutting edge is ground at a slight angle and with a slight undercut below the cutting edge. Reamers must combine both hardness in the cutting edges, for long life, and toughness, so that tool does not fail under the normal forces of use. The material used for these reamers could also vary from carbide to diamonds to other metal once again depending on the nature of the job. Also available today are hand held reamers to cater to customer preferences. These reamers are of the finest quality and measure up to international standards. This is why today these reamers are used in a lot of industrial applications like valve guide, cylinder head, transmission and brake part. The various types of reamers include a hand reamer, ridge reamer, tapered reamer, bushing reamer, pipe reamer and a drill reamer. A hand reamer has a longer taper or lead-in at the front than a machine reamer. An adjustable hand reamer can cover a small range of sizes. A ridge reamer is used in engine cylinders for movement of a piston. A tapered reamer is used for cleaning burrs from a drilled hole or to enlarge a hole. A bushing reamer can easily adjust to cut the exact id dimension required for a tight barrel-to-bushing fit. A pipe reamer has a self-feeding spiral design for extra-fast and easy hand reaming. A drill reamer is used in drilling applications. Other reamers are commonly available. There are various classifications of reamers depending upon the operation, purposes, and shape. Reamers may be spiraled clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on usage such as a tapered hand reamer. Reamers are also available as lemon squeezer or presse de citron; they are made of glass, porcelain, pottery, wood, metal and precious metals. Reamers are used in many applications. Examples include their use in metalworking, finishing and enlarging of holes, reaming in shipbuilding, and structural and plate work. Reamers should adhere to various standards specified by the international standards organization (iso).
