Synthetic oil is oil consisting of chemical compounds which were not originally present in crude oil but were artificially made from other compounds.

Crude oil is used mostly for producing fuel oil and petrol, both important primary energy sources. Synthetic oil could be made to be a substitute for crude oil or specially made to be a substitute for a lubricant oil such as conventional or mineral motor oil refined from petroleum. Synthetic oil is not refined from crude oil, but constructed from pure chemicals selected for their ability to lubricate. When synthetic oil is made as a substitute for lubricant refined from crude oil, it is generally to provide superior mechanical and chemical properties than those found in traditional mineral oils. The purity of petroleum product base stocks significantly reduces lubricant oxidation, which promotes the ability of synthetics to be used higher temperature applications than conventional lubes may be and promotes their ability to be used for extended drain intervals. Synthetic engine oil is also free of the paraffin found in conventional crude oil. With no paraffin to congeal at low temperatures, synthetic motor oil maintain better low temperature fluidity than crude oil do, which protects equipment operating in cold environments - even the relative cold of a just started engine. The technical advantages of synthetic motor oil includes - better chemical & shear stability, decreased evaporative loss, resistance to oxidation, thermal breakdown and oil sludge problems, extended drain intervals with the environmental benefit of less waste oil created. Synthetic oil also have some disadvantages like it is three times expensive than crude oil, potential decomposition problems in certain chemical environments. But being very expensive, synthetic engine oil is confirmed to the arcane world of motor sports and used for high performance cars. They are also widely used in developing countries for a number of reasons like improved overall engine performance, low oil consumption, long drain periods, less engine wear, improved engine cleanliness and faster starting.
