Fountain pen means a pen filled from an external source and contains water based liquid ink reservoir that automatically feeds the writing point. A mechanism is composed of three main parts. The nib, which has the contact with the paper. The feed or black part under the nib controls the ink flow from the reservoir to the nib. The round barrel that holds the nib and feed on the writing end protects the ink reservoir internally. Lewis waterman patented the first practical fountain pen in 1884. Writing instruments designed to carry their own supply of ink had existed in principle for over one hundred years before waterman's patent. During the 1940s and 1950s, fountain pens retained their dominance. During this period innovative models such as the parker 51, the sheaffer snorkel and the eversharp skyline were launched. By the 1960s, refinements in ballpoint pen production gradually ensured its dominance over the fountain pen for casual use. Although a majority of modern fountain pen users use fountain pens as their primary writing instruments over ballpoint and rollerball pens for reasons related to writing comfort, expressive penmanship, aesthetics, history and heritage. Today fountain pens are available in a variety of designs and styles. Some are mass produced while others are custom-designed fountain pens. Most people write differently and many prefer particularly designed fountain pens. Fountain pen to suit an individual's writing needs is called custom fountain pen. Custom-made fountain pens are wonderful combinations of the creativity of the manufacturer and the individual needs of the user; they are manufactured out of wood, glass, precious metal, hard rubber and celluloid according to a specific design (sometimes ordered). Engraving of names and messages are also a part of the custom fountain pen manufacturing process. Precious metals like gold and diamonds may enrich a custom fountain pen. Cost is not often a deterrent to the user who wants a particular design.
