Since about 1970, soccer balls have been stitched or glued together from 32 patches of material-12 of them five-sided and 20 of them six-sided. These patches are arranged so that each pentagon is surrounded by hexagons. Traditionally, the pentagons are colored black and the hexagons white. Mathematics, however, suggests that the older, 32-panel design can itself be modified in various ways to yield a variety of new patterns for spherical and even doughnut-shaped soccer balls. These soccer balls are made from leather and are either hand sewn or machine sewn. The soccer balls manufactured today also conform to the sizes suggested by fifa the football governing body and are strong and durable. In a break with recent tradition, the official ball being used in the 2006 football world cup is made from 14 curved panels. Soccer balls are available in three different sizes, which range from size 3 to size 5. Size 3 soccer balls are the smallest balls and are generally used for children under the age of 8. These soccer balls are generally 23-24 inches in circumference and weigh between 11-12 ounces. Size 4 balls are used for players between the ages of 8-12 and weigh between 12-13 ounces and have a circumference of 25-26 inches. Size 5 soccer ball is the international standard match ball for all ages 12 and older, including all adult play. There are also indoor footballs, which are made of one or two pieces of plastic. Often these soccer balls have designs printed on them to resemble a stitched leather football. There's nothing more inspiring for a youth football player than the gift of a new ball. For home play, or if the child wants to bring a ball to practice, it's important to buy one that complies with team or league rules. On some occasions these soccer balls are also imprinted with a corporate name and logo after which they are used in various promotional activities of that company.
