These are often used to enhance the appearance of color of fabric and paper which causes whitening effect making material look less yellow which increases the overall amount of blue light which is reflected. Basic types of brighteners include diazoles, triazoles and also these brighteners can be boosted by adding certain polyols like molecular weight glycol or alcohol. The very common uses of these brighteners are used in the laundry detergents which replace the whitening agents which are removed during washing by making clothes cleaner.
