A type of dyes which absorbs light in the ultraviolet and violet region of the electromagnetic spectrum and re emits light in the blue region is known as optical brighteners. These are often used to enhance the appearance of color of fabric and paper which causes whitening effect making material look less yellow which increases the overall amount of blue light which is reflected. Basic types of brighteners include diazoles, triazoles and also these brighteners can be boosted by adding certain polyols like molecular weight glycol or alcohol. The very common uses of these brighteners are used in the laundry detergents which replace the whitening agents which are removed during washing by making clothes cleaner. These optical brighteners have also replaced bluing which was formerly used for producing the same effect.These brighteners are used in many papers which are of high brightness which results in their strong fluorescent appearance under uv illumination and also are used in cosmetics as it is highly recommended for blonde hair where these brighteners can only increase the luminance and the sparkle of the hair.
