Chemicals are widely used in mining and metallurgy for applications ranging mineral processing, alumina processing, coal processing, and wastewater treatment etc. Metallurgy is the science of extracting metals from their ores. Modern metallurgical research is concerned with the preparation of radioactive metals, with obtaining metals economically from low-grade ores, with obtaining and refining rare metals hitherto not used, and with the formulation of alloys. Chemicals like polyacrylamide (pam) based flocculants are used for wide mining industry in waste water treatment applications. They come in dry polyacrylamide, anionic and non-ionic chemfloc. Other chemicals include activated carbons, flotation reagents like xanthates, fatty acids, and solvent extractants and ion exchange resins like phosphate, versatic acid etc.
