Valves are any of various devices that regulate the flow of gases, liquids, or loose materials through piping or through apertures by opening, closing, or obstructing ports or passageways. Valves are used in a variety of applications including industrial, military, commercial, residential, transportation. Safety valves have a special importance in the field of fluid mechanics as it automatically opens when pressure reaches a certain level. They are attached to a boiler or a vessel.Safety valves with an open bonnet can be used on steam, air or non-toxic gas, whereas a lifting lever also is often specified. For applications with a significant backpressure a balancing bellows or piston construction is required. A semi-nozzled type should be used for non-toxic, non-corrosive type media at moderate pressures, whereas valves with the full-nozzle type are typically used for corrosive media or extremely high pressures. There are two reasons for the use off bellow in safety valve. Bellow reliable seal the bonnet to the outlet chamber, protecting the guides, moving parts and the spring against failure through action of the fluid, such as dirt, corrosion or temperature. Bellow also compensates for the effect of back pressure, and should therefore always be used when built-up back pressure exceeds from 15% up to 35% of the set pressure. Unless bellows or diaphragm sealing is used, process fluid will enter the spring housing (or bonnet). The amount of fluid depends on the particular design of safety valve. If emission of this fluid into the atmosphere is acceptable, the spring housing may be vented to the atmosphere - an open bonnet. This is usually advantageous when the safety valve is used on high temperature fluids or for boiler applications as, otherwise, high temperatures can relax the spring, altering the set pressure of the valve. However, using an open bonnet exposes the valve spring and internals to environmental conditions, which can lead to damage and corrosion of the spring. When the fluid must be completely contained by the safety valve (and the discharge system), it is necessary to use a closed bonnet, which is not vented to the atmosphere. This type of spring enclosure is almost universally used for small screwed valves and, it is becoming increasingly common on many valve ranges since, particularly on steam, discharge of the fluid could be hazardous to personnel.
