Osmometer is used today for a large variety of clinical, research and industrial applications to measure solute concentrations. These osmometers are basically devices used to measure the osmotic strength of a solution, colloid or compounds. Today there are several different techniques of using these osmometer. Two of the most common ones are vapor pressure techniques and freeze point depression techniques. Vapor pressure osmometer is use to determine the concentration of osmotically active particles that reduce the vapor pressure of a solution. Freezing point depression on the other hand may also be used to determine the osmotic strength of a solution as osmotically active compounds depress the freezing point of a solution. These testing and measuring instrument work efficiently in determining the concentration of salts and sugars in various blood and sugar samples and they are also used to determine the molecular weight of unknown compounds and polymers.
