A ph meter measures the ph of a solution utilizing glass electrodes. The electrode is made of very thin glass that allows h+ ions to pass through it. The meter measures electrical potential and converts this data into a ph reading for a sample.Ph meter is a specific type of voltameter with a very high impedance of input channels highly suitable for potenciometric ph measurements. Voltage produced by the ph electrode is proportional to logartithm of the h+ activity. Ph meter voltameter display is scaled in such a way that the displayed result of measurement is just the ph of the solution. Commercial ph electrodes used in ph meters consist of a h+ selective membrane, and internal and external reference electrodes, usually combined in one housing. Ph can be measured using either ph indicators (like phenolophtaleine) - in form of solution or ph strips - or using potentiometric method. Strips are very useful when all you need is 0.5-1 ph unit accuracy. When you need higher precision, ph meter is the only way to go. In potentiometric methods you measure potential difference between known reference electrode and the measuring ph electrode. The latter depends on the activities of ions you want to measure. This dependence is described by nernst equation, thus once the potential has been measured you can calculate the activity. Ph meters range from simple and inexpensive pen-like devices to complex and expensive laboratory instruments with computer interfaces and several inputs for indicator (ion-sensitive, redox), reference electrodes, and temperature sensors such as thermoresistors or thermocouples. Cheaper models sometimes require that temperature measurements be entered to adjust for the slight variation in ph caused by temperature. Specialty meters and probes are available for use in special applications, harsh environments, etc. Pocket ph meter are readily available today for a few tens of dollars that automatically compensate for temperature. In cosmetic and in the industry of detergents suitable application this ph meter is done.
