A device which is used for measuring the absorbance of particular wave length of light by specific solution and also which is used to determine the concentration of a known solute is known as colorimeters. According to the application of beer lambert law it states that the concentration of a solute is proportional to the absorbance as this particular equipment possesses the same quality. The important and essential parts of colorimeters are light source, an adjustable aperture, a set of colored filters, and a detector which is known as photo resistor which is used for measuring a transmitted light and last one is a meter which is used for displaying the output from the detector. The main elements of these colorimeters are filters which are changeable optics filters used in these colorimeters thus for selecting the wavelength of a light where the solute absorbs most of it in order to maximize the accuracy.Corvettes are very much used in manual colorimeters these are inserted and removed by hand and automated colorimeters if very much fitted with a flow cell through which the solution flows continuously. Another one includes output from a colorimeters would be displayed by an analogue or digital meter which may be shown as a transmittance and in addition the output may be sent to a chart recorder, data logger or computer. In scientific language colorimeter is a light sensitive instrument used for measuring the color intensity of an object or color sample which is in terms of blue, red and green components of light which are reflected from the object or sample. The types of colorimeters are digital, laboratory and portable of which the digital colorimeters make use of light emitting diodes which has a symbol led as a light sources thus for analyzing the absorption spectra and also provides a light crystal display which is known as lcd for the analysis.
Uses of this instrument colorimeters are for testing water quality by screening of chemicals like chlorine, fluoride, cyanide, zinc and hydrazine's etc. These colorimeters are very much used to determine the concentrations of plant nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrate and ammonia which are present in the soil or hemoglobin in the blood for identifying the standard and counterfeit drugs. Colorimeters are also very much used in food industry and also in the manufacture for paint and textiles.
